SA ready to facilitate talks amid Mozambique protests

Date: Dec 26, 2024

South Africa (SA) has announced its readiness to facilitate talks among all parties in Mozambique, following the latest protests triggered by the Constitutional Council's confirmation that Frelimo won the October elections.

Pretoria has urged all parties to commit to urgent discussions aimed at healing the country and setting it on a new political and developmental trajectory.

The call for dialogue comes amid a fresh upsurge in riots linked to the election results. Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane has taken to social media to call for calm, urging his followers to avoid violence and destruction of infrastructure.

As the situation in Mozambique remains tense, SA's intervention is seen as a crucial step towards restoring stability and addressing the political impasse. The commitment to facilitating talks underscores the importance of regional cooperation in resolving conflicts and promoting peace in Southern Africa.
