'The law is failing us as women': SA slams justice system after Nigerian Pastor acquittal

Date: Apr 7, 2025

Some South Africans (SA) have expressed outrage and disappointment following the recent acquittal of Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso.

The Gqeberha High Court in the Eastern Cape province acquitted Omotoso on all 32 charges, including rape, human trafficking, and racketeering. Judge Irma Schoeman ruled that the state failed to present a strong case. Omotoso’s co-accused, Zukiswa Sitho and Lusanda Sulani, were also cleared of all charges.

The ruling has sparked public outcry, with many calling it a “travesty of justice.” Concerns have been raised about the credibility and fairness of South Africa’s legal system, particularly in cases involving gender-based violence and influential individuals.

“I don’t think it’s a good thing that he was found not guilty, especially given his track record and the fact that so many people came forward with evidence,” said one concerned citizen. “It feels like people with power and money always get away with everything. There were witnesses people who carry trauma from what happened and now this man is being sent back to Nigeria as a free man.”

Another added: “The justice system is failing us as women. We don’t feel safe. I think our justice system is corrupt.”

While some acknowledge that legal decisions must be based on evidence, they question whether justice is truly being served in cases involving powerful figures.

“Yes, the law is based on principles and if something isn’t proven, it isn’t proven. But the question remains: are survivors being heard, and is enough being done to protect them?”
