SA govt to develop contingency plans amid US HIV/AIDS funding cuts

Date: Mar 22, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Deputy President Paul Mashatile has assured SA that the government is developing contingency plans to mitigate the impact of reduced funding by the United States (US) for HIV/AIDS patients.

He delivered the keynote address at the Human Rights Day event in Kariega, Eastern Cape province.

Mashatile stated that the government is aiming to end the public threat of the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

"The recent withdrawal of PEPFAR funding by the new USA administration, which currently funds about 17% of SA health programmes, may exacerbate this situation, threatening access to essential healthcare services. This highlights the urgent need to build a resilient and self-reliant healthcare system. The commitment is backed by a pro-poor budgeting strategy that directly enhances the lives of the most vulnerable by directing resources towards those in need, thus making human rights a tangible reality."
