Eastern Cape Department of Health Spokesperson Mkhululi Ndamase confirmed the birth and shared some additional details.
“We can also confirm that the first baby was born at 1H00 CAT this morning (yesterday) at Madweleni Hospital, while there was also a special delivery where a mother, who was born on the December 25 herself, gave birth to twins at the regional hospital today.”
Meanwhile, the National Health Department in the country has urged mothers who welcomed their newborn babies on Christmas day to ensure they attend to their immunisation to achieve a long and healthy life.
More than 570 babies including six set of twins were safely delivered in public health facilities across the country between midnight and midday yesterday.
Among the new mothers include two 13-year-old girls who gave birth in Limpopo province. And three 15-year-olds who gave birth at various hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal province.
“The Department will walk side by side with the new mothers as they embark on this incredible journey of motherhood. This includes ensuring their babies are up to date with immunisation to protect them against vaccine-preventable childhood diseases such as measles and polio,” National Health department Spokesperson Foster Mohale said.
