‘Indigenous language use in African media vital for inclusivity’

Date: Mar 16, 2025

A recent statement from the Indigenous Languages Media in Africa research group at North West University in South Africa highlighted the crucial role of indigenous languages.

These languages play a key role in fostering inclusive communication across the continent.

Professor Abiodun Salawu, a leading academic in media and language studies, said that neglecting the use of these languages in media and public discourse alienates a large segment of Africa’s population.

Professor Salawu explained, “The majority of our people still speak these languages. These are the languages they feel most at ease with; they are the languages through which they can understand information and express their views on social issues.”

He added that by not promoting and effectively using indigenous languages, many people are excluded from national discussions. “Without the use of these languages, we are leaving a lot of people out of the conversations happening in the country. They can’t grasp most of what is said in English, and they don't speak the language in a way that allows them to communicate their thoughts or opinions clearly.”

Salawu’s remarks underline the importance of integrating indigenous langages into African media to encourage broader participation in societal debates and decision-making.
