Rights group ELRC confirms 111 cases of sexual harassment in SA schools

Date: Apr 14, 2025

The South African (SA) rights group, Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) has confirmed that 111 cases of sexual harassment and abuse of learners by teachers, were referred to them in the 2024 and 2025 financial year.

The shocking figure is 29 cases more compared to the previous year, when 82 cases of sexual harassment and abuse by teachers were referred to the council.

Spokesperson at the ELRC Bernice Loxton, says the report is a result of a 2018 collective agreement looking at the annual reporting on Sexual Misconduct at public schools.

Sexual abuse against minors in SA along with Gender Based Violence (GBV) continue to make headlines in the country.

The survivors are blaming the country's justice system for failing to ensure that perpetrators face the full might of the law.
