Tanzania hosts build-up events ahead of Thabo Mbeki Africa Day Lecture

Date: May 22, 2025

Preparations are in full swing in Tanzania ahead of the annual Thabo Mbeki Africa Day Lecture, which will be held this Saturday at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre under the theme “The State of the Continent.”

The event is hosted by the University of South Africa (SA), in collaboration with the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, the Government of Tanzania, and the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation.

As part of the Africa Day activities, delegates are set to travel to Morogoro, a city rich in liberation history.

Speaking to Channel Africa, Lukhanyo Neer, Chief Operating Officer at the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, highlighted Morogoro’s deep-rooted ties to SA’s liberation struggle.

“Morogoro was home to the African Nationa Congress in the 1960s, hosting a military base and the landmark 1969 Morogoro Conference. It also housed the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College, established for exiled SA students with support from Tanzanian authorities and Scandinavian nations,” said Neer.

A symbolic tree-planting ceremony will take place in Morogoro, where former SA President Thabo Mbeki will plant a tree alongside those already planted by former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete and SA President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Neer described the ceremony as a gesture to honour Africa’s collective contribution to SA’s freedom and to maintain the continent-wide solidarity that shaped the liberation movement.

In addition to the commemorative activities, a high-level roundtable discussion will be held on Friday focusing on how SA’s G20 Presidency can advance Africa’s development.

Neer noted the significance of SA’s pledge to champion an African agenda within the G20 framework, particularly since the African Union’s recent inclusion in the group.

“This roundtable is crucial. It allows Africans to reflect on our position and define how we can best use the G20 platform to accelerate the continent’s renaissance,” Neer said.
