SA experiencing severe food insecurity

Date: Aug 20, 2024

A Human Sciences Research Council study has shown that South Africa (SA) is experiencing severe food insecurity across the country,  contrary to the view that SA enjoys food security at a national level.

The HSRC's Professor Thokozani Simelane says over 43 000 households were sampled in each district in the country since 2019.

Simelane says KwaZulu-Natal provincial government requested the HSRC to conduct the survey, the first of its kind since 1994,  because the provincial agriculture department wanted to see if their various interventions are having the expected impact.

Simelane will be handing over the study to the provincial government at an agriculture indaba in Durban this Tuesday, “You'll find that contrary to what have been believed on is that urban areas are better off than rural areas.

In reality the urban  areas are very much affected by food insecurity because the land available is limited and they have limited means of producing their own  food.

Whereas in rural areas, on the other side, there is plenty of land. But the agricultural activities of production have been abandoned.”
