Calls for SA Basic Education Department to probe sale of matric results

Date: Jan 13, 2025

A well-known South African (SA) education activist Hendrick Makaneta has called on the Basic Education Department (DBE) to urgently conduct an internal investigation following allegations that a private entity has been selling matric results.

This follows a social media post alleging that the results are being sold online for R100 ($5.22).

The department has yet to react to the allegations.

DBE Minister Siviwe Gwarube will officially announce the 2024 matric exams amid hopes of a continued improvement in the national pass rate. The ceremony will be held at the Mosaiek Church in Johannesburg.

More than 900 000 matric learners sat for their National Senior Certificate exams, comprising full-time and part-time learners from all nine provinces in 2024.

Makaneta says if the allegations are true, they must be resolved swiftly to reassure South Africans that the education system remains secure.

“The situation is a cause for great concern. If true, this suggests a potential breach of data security and a violation of learners’ right to privacy. The sale of results, whether legitimate or not, undermines public confidence in the education system and casts doubt on the DBE’s ability to secure its systems. In light of these developments, we urge the DBE to conduct an internal investigation and call on the Special Investigating Unit to intervene to ensure transparency and accountability.”

Today’s release of the results comes after a court battle between the DBE, the Information Regulator and AfriForum over the public release of results in newspapers.
