Date: Jul 24, 2024

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, says this week will mark 120 days without load shedding. But he also says it’s too early to claim victory. He was delivering his budget vote speech in parliament.

Yesterday represented the 118th day without load shedding. According to the government, this is the longest period of no load shedding from September to December 2020, saving over R6 billion ($330 million) in diesel used during the same period.

Rmaphosa adds that his office is prioritising the fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide as well as corruption.

While the balance sheet of State-owned enterprise is being supported as well as significant expansion of investment in infrastructure.

He’s delegated his Deputy to resolve issues facing military veterans and traditional leaders.

‘Committee to oversee Presidency’

The uMkhonto weSizwe party has questioned the absence of a committee overseeing the Presidency. The party calls for the reduction of the Cabinet size and scaling down on the perks of the Executive.

In addition, it says the government must borrow money from the Brazil, Russia, India, China and SA countries rather than the International Monetary Fund.

The FFPlus also echoes the calls for a committee to monitor the Presidency.

The Economic Freedom Fighters says Ramaphosa must also take the water crisis and the fight against crime to his office.

The Inkatha Freedom Party puts emphasis on the plight of the SA National Defence Force.

Ramaphosa will reply to his budget vote this afternoon.
