Rwanda votes, Kagame seeks fourth term

Date: Jul 15, 2024

Voters in Rwanda headed to the polls today to elect their next President, with 66-year-old incumbent Paul Kagame who has ruled the central African country for nearly a quarter of a century expected to cruise to victory.

Voters have started queuing at Kinyinya Primary school voting station outside the City of Kigali in Rwanda.

Polls officially opened at 07h00 (CAT) and will close later this afternoon at 15h00 (CAT).

Kagame, feared and admired in equal measure, believes that the people of Rwanda want him to extend his 24-year rule in an election as opposed to the opinion of his detractors.

The scale of his victory in 2017, along with his 95% in 2003 and 93% ,in 2010 raised some questions about how truly democratic the elections were.
