SA civil society urges President to address nation over explosive police claims

Date: Jul 9, 2025

South African (SA) Civil society movement Defend Our Democracy (DOD) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently address the country.

This, in the wake of explosive allegations by KwaZulu-Natal province's Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

The Commissioner has accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and senior police officials of interfering in investigations and maintaining links with criminal syndicates.

The movement has described the allegations as a threat to public trust in the institutions tasked with upholding law and order. It is now demanding that Ramaphosa respond with urgency and decisiveness.

“This is an absolute disaster. It requires the utmost urgency because it speaks to institutions that are tasked with public safety. They're tasked with the rule of law, and a delay will speak to a lacklustre reaction,” said DOD Executive Director Naledi Kuali.

“It has to be a high priority because the country right now sits concerned, and the people they trust the most in times of need, there's already a loss of faith.”

DOD has also called for the establishment of a full, independent judicial commission of inquiry to investigate what it describes as the "capture of the criminal justice system" by organised crime. The movement says such an inquiry must be impartial and transparent, with the power to subpoena and recommend prosecution if necessary.
