SA teachers, parents praised for the high matric pass rate

Date: Jan 14, 2025

South African (SA) Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has attributed the achievement of the matric class of 2024 to the support of teachers and parents.

The matric pass rate is the highest in the history of South Africa at 87.3%.  The national pass rate for the National Senior Certificate examinations has increased from 82.9% in 2023.

However, Makaneta says a lack of resources has continued to affect learners in rural areas.

“There is no doubt that learners and teachers have been able to put in a lot of effort particularly if you look at KwaZulu-Natal province and I saw the impact that the Saturday classes have on learners so I’m not surprised that they managed to get this number and I think that we should applaud them but at the same time provinces such as Gauteng province continue to be at the top because of the resource as compared to rural provinces at Eastern Cape I think there must be a way to ensure that all learners have access to resources.”

The National Association of School Governing Bodies says the outstanding pass rate is the result of the relevant stakeholders in the education sector working together.

The organisation’s Matakanye Matakanye says, “We want to thank our teachers who worked very hard and the school governing bodies who are drawing laws in schools. the policies and everything. They drew policies that will support their children and hence got this high percentage of 87.3 which is a high jump. This shows that now all the stakeholders were not working in silos. they were working together to achieve what we have achieved.”

Provinces are expected now to announce their results and present top learners with awards and bursaries to enable them to further their studies.
