An increasing number of South African children are developing serious conditions typically seen only in adults due to obesity.
The study is the first of its kind in South Africa to comprehensively assess obesity-related comorbidities in children under the age of 12. It found that conditions such as high blood pressure, elevated glucose levels, and abnormal cholesterol are alarmingly common among children living with obesity.
Researchers warn that these early-onset health issues could lead to long-term complications if not urgently addressed, and have called for targeted interventions to curb childhood obesity and promote healthier lifestyles.
