Speaking on the sidelines of the African National Congress’s election campaign in Durban, in the KwaZulu Natal province, Mbeki says peace will only be possible if Israel recognises the rights of Palestinian people.

This comes as international pressure on Israel is mounting because of increased attacks in Rafah in the south of Gaza. Mbeki elaborates,” I'm saying, it doesn't matter what the government of Israel might think, they might think they will use their force and their might to annihilate the Palestinian people.

“It's not going to work. You can't kill that spirit of rebellion among the Palestinian people to say: we will fight until we get our rights.”
