SA Sea Rescue Institute urges Vaal River communities to evacuate amid flood risk

Date: Apr 27, 2025

South Africa's National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has appealed to communities living along the Vaal River to remain extra vigilant for flash flooding.

On Friday, the Department of Water and Sanitation opened the Vaal Dam’s 10th sluice gate after water levels surged to an alarming 118% following heavy downpours.

The NSRI reports that emergency teams are working tirelessly to rescue people and animals from rising waters. However, some residents continue to refuse evacuation from low-lying areas, putting their lives at risk.

NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon has urged residents in danger zones to evacuate, emphasising the importance of early action.

"While the NSRI, police, and emergency services remain on high alert 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, there has been a strong focus on preparedness. Early warnings from the Vaal Dam, Bloemhof Dam, and surrounding waterways indicated that water levels were expected to exceed capacity as early as April. While awareness was raised regarding the potential impact, some residents have been reluctant to evacuate, and in certain cases, areas suspected to be at risk have yet to be breached by rising waters."
