Repatriation of SA soldiers to happen by Thursday: Minister

Date: Feb 10, 2025

South African Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Angie Motshekga says the remains of the 14 SANDF soldiers who died in the eastern DRC two weeks ago will be repatriated this week.

She confirmed that the process will be completed by Thursday at the latest.

They were expected back home last week Saturday but that did not happen due to some logistical challenges.

The members, who are part of the United Nations peace keeping mission in the DRC, were killed in an attack by M23 rebels.

Motshekga said this during Parliament debate on the SANSF soldiers killed in the DRC.

“And chair, I must say from the latest report, yes, the delay is very disheartening. Currently from the report that we are receiving, they are still in Uganda, undergoing all the medical processes. And also, we are all pressing very hard to get our deceased. We were hoping that we would get them by today. But we are told by Thursday they will be here.”
