AU regrets not having a woman vying for Chairperson position

Date: Dec 14, 2024

The Chairperson of the African Union’s (AU) Panel of Eminent Africans, Ambassador Konjit SineGiorgis, says it is regrettable that the continent could not produce a woman for the position of AU Commission Chairperson.

She was speaking at the AU’s Leadership Debate in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti, Raila Odinga of Kenya, and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar are vying for the post.

SineGiorgis says the AU has a rightful place on the global stage.

“It has become a partner that can’t be easily pushed aside. We are claiming our place where decisions are made regarding our continent. Africa is coming out of edge. The three candidates to the post of the chairman, chairpersonship of the AU Commission, are going to participate in a debate. I regret that the fact that our continent could not also have a female candidate and place the the AU Commission on the right side of history. This is a serious homework we have to take into consideration.”
