Date: May 6, 2025

The Administrator of the Cathedral of Christ, King Church in Johannesburg, South Africa (SA) Father Lawrence Ndlovu says the mandate of the Catholic Church in Africa has been impressive for decades.

He says the work that the church has been doing in Africa, focusing on education and healthcare facilitated progress in communities.
About 133 cardinal electors anticipated to vote for a new pope starting on Wednesday, 18 of them hail from Africa.

Ndlovu says the leaders of the church should promote equality for all people.

He emphasised the importance of electing a Pope who understand the role of the church in the international community.

"The cardinals should be looking at the Pope that is going to be a global figure that understand the work and also working for humanity."

Ndlovu highlighted that the new Pope needs to understand his mandate, which is to care for the people.

He says the church represent other part of the world, not only the Catholic.

"When electing the new Pope, they must look at the suitable candidate who is going to look at the current existence of the church."

He stated that the care for the people is primarily what the church exist for.
