SA's Rural Health Advocacy Project calls for proper distribution of services

Date: Apr 14, 2025

The Rural Health Advocacy Project in South Africa (SA) says while they welcome the Department of Health's announcement that 1 600 new health care vacancies will be advertised, they want the jobs to be evenly distributed in the rural sector.

Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi announced that the National Health Council has approved advertisement of 1200 jobs for doctors, 200 nurses and 250 other health care professionals at the cost of R1. 7-billion.

But at this stage, there is no criteria for how these resources will be distributed.

The Projects Executive Director Russell Rensburg says public health care data must be used to determine how these jobs are allocated.

"Our view is that while we welcome the announcement by the Minister and the Member of the Executive Council, all these additional health forms will fill these vacancies.

We want to know what is the criteria that is going to be used  in terms of how this is distributed because it’s like 1 600 and 1200 doctors, and many of these professionals will be placed in regional hospitals, often far away from where the need is at district level and rural district."
