Date: Jun 6, 2024

In the wake of relentless heavy rains, South Africa's City of Cape Town is grappling with widespread flooding that has impacted numerous communities.

Authorities have reported that at least 180 homes in Nomzamo, Strand have been inundated, with similar situations unfolding in Khayelitsha, Philippi, Gugulethu, Kraaifontein, Elsiesriver, Dunoon, and Belgravia. The adverse weather conditions have left hundreds of residents struggling with the sudden deluge.

Charlotte Powell, Spokesperson for Disaster Risk Management, has confirmed that city officials are actively responding to the crisis. Efforts are underway to provide immediate relief to the affected areas, with more rainfall anticipated.

"The Roads Department is distributing sand and milling to manage the flooding, while Informal Settlement Management is conducting thorough assessments and will distribute flood kits as needed," Powell stated.

The city's infrastructure has been severely tested, with many roadways submerged and obstructed by debris. The Roads Department is working tirelessly to clear the blockages and restore accessibility.

Concurrently, the Electricity Department is addressing multiple weather-induced power outages. With continuous downpours expected throughout the day, the situation remains dynamic, and city officials are maintaining vigilant assessments to keep abreast of the evolving emergency.
