Search and rescue operations are still underway for missing persons, including four learners who were travelling in a minibus taxi that was swept away by floodwaters.
At least 57 people have been confirmed dead and hundreds more displaced. Mashatile made his remarks ahead of answering oral questions in the National Assembly.
"Also, on behalf of government, I join those who extended condolences to the families of the people affected by the disaster in the Eastern Cape province. Our hearts are with you. Government will do everything in its power to assist you," said Mashatile.
"The President will be visiting the Eastern Cape province tomorrow."
