SA President to deliver statement at G20 leaders’ summit

South African(SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver the country’s statement at the G20 leaders’ summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, today.

Ramaphosa is expected to focus on fighting hunger and poverty and reforming institutions of global governance.

Ramaphosa will be accompanied by International Relations and Co-operation Minister Ronald Lamola and Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni.

Brazil is chairing the global platform gathering and will hand over the presidency of the G20 to SA.

Brazil’s G20 presidency is prioritising a number of areas like fighting poverty, energy transition, promotion of sustainable development in its economic, social, environmental and the reform of global governance institutions.

The G20 is the premier forum for global economic cooperation and global governance representing 85% of global Gross Domestic Product.

SA will be officially handed over the G20 presidency during the Rio leaders summit and Pretoria will continue to consolidate initiatives of its global South predecessors.
