The province received a $28 million cash injection from national government for rebuilding infrastructure that was damaged during last month's severe floods. The province was the hardest hit, with roads, homes, and infrastructure destroyed across several districts. Over 100 people died. The Member of the Eastern Cape’s Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Committee, Zolile Williams says they are waiting for more funding as the current allocation is insufficient.
“As you'd know, it wouldn't be enough. The challenge is we have to construct temporary units. Now in the allocation we are receiving I don't seem to see any allocation into our provincial human settlement department for recovery units. You know that livestock has perished. Plantation fields have been destroyed. And there's no allocation as yet to restore those people's fields and the livestock,” Williams said.
