Reflecting on the 2011 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation-led intervention in Libya, Mbeki criticised the decision by three African countries SA, Nigeria and Gabon, to vote in favour of the United Nations (UN) resolution that ultimately led to the killing of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
“When the Security Council met to discuss the resolution on Libya, the SA ambassador, a temporary member at the time tried to hide because his instruction from his boss in SA had been to vote in favour of the resolution,” said Mbeki.
“The United States ambassador looked for him, found him, and physically took him into the UN chamber so that he could vote for the resolution which he did to destroy Libya,” he added.
