SA Labour Dept commits to decreasing youth unemployment rate by 2030

Date: Jan 10, 2025

The South African (SA) Department of Employment and Labour says it is committed to decreasing the unemployment rate of young people to 27% by 2030.

Through its Labour Activation Programme, the department has pledged R650 million to the private sector and other partners.

One of the projects, Green Riders, trains young South Africans in last-mile delivery services, and aims to equip some 50 000 people in the Western Cape with the skills needed to earn a living. 350 000 young people across the country are set to benefit from such programmes.

Minister for Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth says they are working with other departments and the private sector to bring down the issue of unemployment in terms of the medium-term development plan.

“We have also got a programme that we are calling the Labour Activation Programme, the one on the green bikes, where we are partnering and targeting 350 000 job opportunities for our young ones, particularly women.”
