SA Minister urges public to show empathy towards rape victims

Date: Apr 5, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, has appealed to members of the public to refrain from making jokes about or mocking victims of rape.

Mchunu says these are serious matters and should be handled with the utmost sensitivity.

He was addressing members of the media on the progress made in the case involving the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl on school premises in the Eastern Cape province last year, while she was waiting for scholar transport.

"We would like to make an appeal that all the women and children who find themselves in these unfortunate situations, they need our empathy and support. There is no way we can throw in any ridicule that will further exacerbate the pain that not only them would feel. Remember that each one of them is someone's daughter, sister and a family member," said Mchunu.
