SA party criticises President for engaging Elon Musk on Expropriation Bill

Date: Feb 5, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for telephonically engaging Elon Musk on the recently signed Expropriation Bill.

The EFF claims that Ramaphosa has effectively lost the power he holds as President, opening himself up to the control and manipulation of big corporations. This criticism follows the Presidency's confirmation that Ramaphosa spoke to Musk regarding issues of misinformation and disinformation about SA.

In a strongly worded statement, the EFF expressed dismay at Ramaphosa's decision to break diplomatic protocols by calling Musk, an "unelected" government official. This comes after Musk questioned Ramaphosa on social media platform X about SA's ownership laws, following President Donald Trump's threat to cut funding to the country. The EFF stated that the breaking of diplomatic protocol should not be taken lightly by citizens, as it compromises the country's sovereignty at the behest of United States foreign aid.

The party further added that Ramaphosa's conduct in lobbying an unelected billionaire who seeks to influence government policies has the potential to open the door for state capture.
