SA Minister of Agriculture working on improving relations with US

Date: May 16, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen says his Ministry is working on improving relations with the United States (US) government as agriculture is the fabric of SA.

He was speaking at the National Maize Producers Organisation (NAMPO) Park in Bothaville, in Province of Free State.

Steenhuisen says as agriculture contributes directly to the SA's food security.

He says the 49 Afrikaners who have sought refuge in the US are beyond his control, but says some farmers have expressed willingness to stay in SA.

"This new tariff regime posed by the US of 30% will be terribly harmful but we are lucky we have seen a 90 day pause in that, which is allowing us to continue the way in which we were before.

We are work with different government sectors to put together a package deal which we will be able to offer the US."
