'SA's ANC must improve or risk losing 2026 local elections'

Date: Aug 4, 2024

The South Africa's political party, African National Congress (ANC) says the party will have to pull up its socks or risk losing the 2026 Local Government Elections.

ANC Interim Spokesperson Zuko Godlimpi says the party should sort out the challenges encountered by South Africans at the local government level ahead of the 2026 elections.
Godlimpi was speaking to the media at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on Gauteng’s East Rand, where the party held its third day of the NEC meeting.

“All that we are talking about is if we don’t get it right when we get to the local government elections we will not win. Precisely because, in fact, this election was fought on the local government platform, not on the national platform. So it is quite clear that the major issue that the ANC has to do is sort out the issue of local government. If you look at the issues that people were talking about, partly why Gauteng intervened on transformers and electricity are things viewed in the domain of local government. So it was clear that the issues were about that.”

The NEC Lekgotla is set to begin today. The meeting will refine action plans based on the six priorities of the ANC’s 2024 election manifesto which include driving inclusive growth; job creation; reducing poverty and tackling the high cost of living; and building a capable, ethical and developmental state.
