SA Minister allocates funds to SABC, ICASA, Post office

Date: Jul 15, 2024

South Africa’s (SA) Communications and Digital Technologies Minister, Solly Malatsi, says the aim of the SABC's strategic plan and the SA Post Office (SAPO)'s business rescue plan is to ensure financial stability.

About $89 million has been allocated to the SABC, the Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) and the Post Office.

The department and its entities have been allocated an overall budget of $217 million for this financial year.

Malatsi was delivering his maiden budget vote speech during a mini plenary of the National Assembly. “We must take care to ensure that State-owned entities under this department are not contributors to the country's financial woes.

“Given the reality that the budget allocations are unlikely to increase in future, the SABC's new turnaround plan and the business rescue that is currently underway at the Post Office will need to ensure that they deliver financial stability of these entities.

“A total of $1.6 billion has been allocated for transfers and subsidies to Information and Communication Technology enterprise development and State-owned enterprises oversight, to ensure the effective monitoring of initiatives such as the SAPO business rescue, the SABC strategy and ICASA's regulatory compliance operations.”
