Legal battle over SA’s Zulu King's throne on day two in Supreme Court

Date: May 29, 2025

The legal battle over the South African (SA) Zulu King's throne is on day two in the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein, Free State Province.

Prince Mbonisi Bekithemba Ka Bhekuzulu has argued before the SCA that the meeting that led to the identification of King Misuzulu KaZwelithi as the successor was frivolous.

He says their role as senior members of the Zulu Royal house was subverted and that there are minutes of a meeting that can prove that.

He argued that the meeting was later turned into a meeting for identification.

It was argued that had President Cyril Ramaphosa followed proper processes in appointing an investigating committee, court battles could have been avoided.

On Wednesday, Senior Counsel for Ramaphosa and the Minister for Cooperative Governance Velenkosini Hlabisa argued that the legal battle that is before the SCA is not about the legitimacy of King MisuZulu kaZwelithini but about whether the president acted within the law.

Advocate Marumo Moerane argued that the president did not appoint the King but recognised him after he was identified and crowned by the royal family.
