Withdrawal of SADC mission in DRC proceeding to plan: SANDF

Date: May 19, 2025

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) says the withdrawal of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission in the Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) is proceeding according to plan.

SANDF is part of the SADC mission which had been deployed by the bloc to restore peace and instability, however the M23 and other groups have since captured a number of areas in the Eastern Congo.

SADC leaders have since withdrawn the mission to allow the peace talks to continue.

The SANDF says the withdrawal of the troops from DRC in Goma to Chato in Tanzania is under way. It says the logistical arrangements for the withdrawal remain under the full coordination and control of SADC.

The defence force has assured the public that SANDF members deployed as part of the mission are safe, adequately supplied for and continue to receive their daily meals and essentials.

It also says no member is stranded or without support.
