While the SA National Liquor Act prohibits the sale or supply of alcoholic products to minors, or persons under the age of 18 years, federation says it has noted that some traders seek to take short cuts and sometimes sell these products to minors.
The federation's Chief Executive Officer, Angela Russell, says the Easter period has historically been a time to reflect and recommit to values that strengthen communities. She urges traders to check identity documents, to ensure that they are trading during the legislated hours, and refuse service to intoxicated customers.
Russell has encouraged businesses to verify the age of all alcohol consumers by requesting identification.
“We do have an issue in this country with under aged drinking, and I think it’s very critical for everyone to play their part and insure that they are not selling alcohol to minors”, Russell said.
