Indian national arrested in Zambia over alleged smuggling of cash, gold

Date: Apr 21, 2025

An Indian citizen has been arrested at Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda International Airport after allegedly attempting to smuggle millions of Dollars in cash and gold out of Zambia.

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) confirmed that the man was intercepted on Sunday as he prepared to board a flight to the United Arab Emirates. Authorities say he was found in possession of more than $2.5 million in undeclared currency and gold.

While officials have yet to release the suspect’s name, the DEC stated that investigations are under way to trace the origin of the funds and determine whether the suspect was acting alone or as part of a wider network.

“This arrest is part of our continued efforts to combat financial crimes and prevent the illegal transfer of wealth out of the country,” said a DEC Spokesperson.

Smuggling and illicit financial flows remain a concern for Zambian authorities, who have recently increased surveillance at key border points and international airports.

The suspect is expected to appear in court once preliminary investigations are complete.
