The video circulating on social media features Bornface Banks, an awaiting-trial prisoner at the Goodwood Correctional Centre in Cape Town in the Western Cape province where he claims that he enjoys many amenities in prison such as access to free food, electricity, and education.
The viral video has raised serious concerns about the state of the country's correctional facilities.
National Spokesperson for South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights, Miles Bhudu, says prisoners are exploiting weaknesses in the correctional system. “I won't be surprised if he's in the country illegally and is being setup to say these things.
“He would never ever say these where he comes from and I think this thing is multipronged. They are protesting or maybe doing this to attract maximum attention so that they can expose worse things that are happening not only at that institution.
“The people that are supposed to make sure that these things are not happening have given up on the system. Prisoners are human beings and they do as they please because they can see the loopholes in the system, they are taking massive advantage.”
