Eleven foreign nationals arrested in SA for Illegal mining activities

Date: Mar 13, 2025

Eleven undocumented foreign nationals, aged between 28 and 39, have been arrested in Mpumalanga province, South Africa (SA), during a multi-disciplinary operation aimed at tackling illegal mining activities.

The operation targeted three prominent illegal mining kingpins, and police uncovered precious metal, mining equipment, and cash during the bust.

Two of the three suspected kingpins were previously arrested earlier this month on charges related to illegal mining and had been released on bail. The arrests highlight the ongoing efforts of SA authorities to combat illegal mining, a growing concern in many provinces.

The individuals arrested will face charges related to illegal mining and violations of the Immigration Act. The case will be heard in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court, where the suspects will answer to the charges against them.

Illegal mining continues to be a significant issue in SA, contributing to environmental degradation, organised crime, and economic loss. Authorities have ramped up their efforts to curb these activities and bring those responsible to justice.

The South African Police Service has promised continued vigilance in their fight against illegal mining, with further operations expected in the coming weeks to target key figures within the illegal mining syndicates.
