SA teacher union fears murder, mutilation of teenager may discourage after school learning

Date: Jun 5, 2025

South African (SA) Democratic Teachers Union Representative, Owen Rikhotso says the murder of Likhona Fose has negatively affected their afternoon classes programme with neighbouring schools, as girl learners are now afraid for their lives

Rikhotso was speaking during Fose's memorial service at the Nkone Maruping primary school in Braamfischerville, Soweto. The 14-year-old was found dead on Sunday last week after she went missing on Saturday.

Her mutilated body was discovered in a veld, a few kilometres away from her home in Durban Deep, Roodepoort, west of the city of Johannesburg. Rikhotso says such crimes have widespread effects ...

“With our neighbouring schools, we run a number of extra classes. These kinds of diabolical and evil acts have a negative impact in our intervention programs. Now, we have girl learners that are afraid and are scared to come to school for afternoon lessons. These crimes rob learners of knowledge and disturb the system as a whole”, Rikhotso said.
