Date: Jul 18, 2025

African Union (AU) Chairperson, President João Lourenço of Angola, has appointed President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi as his Special Envoy for the Sahel region.

In a statement released on Thursday, the AU Chairperson confirmed that Ndayishimiye, who also serves as the Union’s Champion for Youth, Peace and Security, will lead high-level diplomatic efforts to address the worsening security and humanitarian situation in the Sahel.

Lourenço expressed his gratitude to Ndayishimiye for accepting the critical political assignment, describing it as a key step in advancing the AU’s peace and security agenda.

The Burundian leader’s mandate as Special Envoy will include strengthening dialogue with governments, regional bodies, civil society groups, and other key stakeholders across the Sahel. His role will focus on fostering consensus and developing sustainable strategies to achieve long-term peace and stability in the region.

According to the AU, Ndayishimiye brings extensive political experience and a demonstrated commitment to Pan-Africanism, regional integration, and co-operation. His appointment is seen as a reaffirmation of the continental body’s determination to promote peacebuilding and stability in one of Africa’s most volatile regions.

Lourenço expressed full confidence in Ndayishimiye’s ability to advance the AU’s vision, noting his proven leadership and deep understanding of Africa’s complex political dynamics. The appointment also aligns with the AU’s wider goal of ‘silencing the guns’ and promoting inclusive dialogue and development in the Sahel.

The AU Chairperson has called on the AU Commission, the AU Mission in the Sahel , regional actors, and the international community to fully support the Special Envoy as he begins his engagements in the region.
