The Ottawa Treaty, which has drastically reduced landmine use, is now at risk as some nations signal intent to pull out. Tamar Gabelnick, Director of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, condemned the idea, stressing the devastating impact on civilians, particularly children.
“We know over time 85% of the casualties of anti-personnel landmines are civilians, and 40 percent are children. So, what you're doing is, when you're considering using landmines on your own soil, you’re planting inevitable dangers for your own civilians, for your children,” Gabelnick said.
The call highlights the long-term dangers of landmines and the need for continued international cooperation to protect innocent lives.
