Date: Aug 17, 2024

The legal representative of the widows of the slain Marikana miners, Advocate Dali Mpofu, says the South Africa’s government has not paid several claims related to the massacre.

This follows Justice Minister Thembi Nkadimeng’s statement that more than R350 million ($19,45 million) has been paid out in claims related to the Marikana Massacre.

16,36 million) Twelve years ago, police gunned down 34 mineworkers who had been on an unprotected strike to demand a R12 500 salary.

Ten other people were killed before the massacre.

Mpofu says the situation is worrying. “With regards to our case against the government, they said today in parliament that they paid R300 million ($16,36 million). It’s still the same $16,36 million they spoke about last year.”

But the government itself still has 10 outstanding cases they haven’t compensated. Then the cases that are bothering us the most are the Sibanye and the Ramaphosa cases. Both Ramaphosa and Sibanye are delaying, the reason Ramaphosa doesn’t come here is because he lied when he made that promise. No one has restricted him from coming here,” he adds.
