The ports were closed after heavy snowfalls in the Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.
Despite efforts to assess and clear the route, the continued presence of ice and snow has led to treacherous driving conditions. Heavy snowfalls and rain in SA national roads led to the closure of the border posts.
The national road N3 between KwaZulu-Natal and joining provinces was closed from Friday until late last night.
Two people were confirmed dead due to exposure to extreme cold. In a statement the Border Management Authority says the continued presence of ice and snow has led to treacherous driving conditions, making it unsafe for travelers and transport services.
Travellers are advised to use the Boesmansnek and Monontsha ports of entry as alternatives together with Ficksburg port, Caledonspoort, Makhaleng as well as Maseru Ports of entry to enter Lesotho.
