SA Medical Industry Ombudsman probes death of doctor, alleged abuse of power

Date: May 20, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Medical Industry Ombudsman, Professor Tale Mokoena has launched an investigation into the death of a medical intern at the Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital, in the country’s KwaZulu-Natal province

Doctor Alulutho Mazwi (25) dies last week, allegedly after he was denied sick leave by his manager. Several trade unions and associations have since highlighted the poor working conditions medical interns are subjected to, including growing allegations of abuse of power by hospital seniors.

Mokoena says his office was requested by SA’s Health Minister, Doctor Aaron Motsoaledi to investigate the matter. Apart from the circumstances surrounding Mwazi's death, a team will also look into working conditions and whether there are systemic problems.
