Sudan shuts down internet as students sit rescheduled exams during conflict

Date: Jul 1, 2025

More than 200 000 high school students in Sudan have started their rescheduled 2024 final examinations, with the government blocking internet access across the country during the exams to prevent cheating.

The tests are being held only in areas controlled by the Sudanese army, alongside several external examination centres, including refugee camps in neighbouring countries.

Local media report that the Rapid Support Forces, the army’s rival faction, are considering organising their own exams in the areas they control. The government has yet to reveal how many eligible candidates are likely to miss the tests. However, during the initial 2023 exams held in December last year, it is believed that more than 60% of pupils were unable to participate.
