SA schools urged to produce learners with skills the economy needs

Date: Oct 5, 2024

South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa says schools have to produce learners with the skills that the economy desperately needs.

He was addressing hundreds of teachers at the 24th National Teachers Awards in Boksburg east of Johannesburg.

Currently, almost 50% of the country’s youth are unemployed.

PRamaphosa says teachers need to prepare learners for the future from an early age.

“We are working to strengthen the foundations of early learning. This is to ensure successful education outcomes in the future. The education curriculum is being revised, updated and reformed to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world. (With) the high rate of youth unemployment in our country, educators need to ensure that our schools are producing the skills our economy needs. Our schools must be focussed on the future and as we look at every learner, we must ask ourselves are we equipping these learners for the future,” says Ramaphosa.
