He was reflecting on the nation’s struggle ahead of the 31st anniversary of South Africa’s democracy month.
Sooliman questioned the intentions of some government officials, saying:
"Most of the time I questioned them. Have you come into government to serve the people or serve yourself? And unfortunately, we're getting a larger component of people more interested in serving themselves than serving the people."
He also raised concerns about corruption and state capture over the past decade, adding:
"Over the last eight to ten years, there have been lots of concerns about corruption, state capture, and the country going the wrong way, with money being lost. And then, of course, we've had COVID in between, you can't blame anybody for that. We've had the floods of 2019, the storms that affected parts of Durban, and the civil unrest of 2021, you can't blame any government for that, 50 billion Rand lost. Then came the huge floods of 2022, again a huge loss. So those are budgets the government could not cater for."
