SA President arrives in Washington to reset US-SA relationship

Date: May 19, 2025

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in the United States(US).

He is expected to meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington District of Columbia (DC)

This visit will enable Pretoria and Washington DC to reset the strategic relationship between the two countries.

There are a number of issues on the agenda including trade, investment, geopolitical issues and the genocide claims that have been backed by Trump, despite SA authorities’ insistence that there is no political persecution in the country.

It’s a pivotal moment as Pretoria and Washington DC want to reset their bilateral ties. Relations have been strained since Trump’s return to the White House.

Other issues on the table include the G20 summit and the smooth transition as the US will take-over from SA.

Ramaphosa says the relationship between the two countries is important.

This is set to be one of the much-anticipated political engagements for Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa says he’s unfazed and looks forward to engaging with Trump.
