The solidarity walk aimed to highlight the shared history of oppression and resistance, with participants calling attention to the humanitarian toll of Israel’s continued military operations in Palestinian territories, a situation that has sparked renewed global condemnation.
Selaelo Makhwidiri, one of the organisers of the event, emphasised the historical connection between South Africans and Palestinians. “In a lot of ways, we see ourselves in them, and it was important to bring this walk, to bring Palestinian solidarity to Soweto, to make that statement that Black and Coloured people of this country stand with the people of Palestine because we’ve been through apartheid,” Makhwidiri said.
The march is part of a growing movement across SA advocating for international accountability and a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Middle East.
