South Africa's Department of International Relations has announced the recall of Andrew Lebona, the Consul-General to the United Arab Emirates, pending an investigation into allegations of misconduct.
The department's Spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri, confirmed that Lebona is required to appear before an investigative team to address several pressing questions related to the accusations.
According to Phiri, the decision to recall Lebona was influenced by credible information provided by whistleblowers concerning potential security breaches and other forms of misconduct.
Lebona, who was stationed in Dubai, has been summoned back to Pretoria as part of the preliminary stages of the investigation.
"The consul general has been recalled from Dubai to Pretoria to respond to the preliminary investigation's findings, and it is important to note that the investigation is still ongoing," stated Phiri.
The Department of International Relations is taking these allegations seriously and is committed to maintaining the integrity of its foreign service operations. Further details will be disclosed as the investigation progresses.
