SA non-profit organisation warns of online threats to children

Date: Jan 20, 2025

Executive Director of the non-profit organisation Jelly Beans in South Africa (SA), Edith Kriel, says the internet has become an avenue for sexual predators to prey on young children.

She was reacting to the arrest of a 35-year-old man in Midrand, Johannesburg, who was found in possession of thousands of videos and images of child pornography on Friday. Kriel says there is an increased risk of child abuse due to internet access.

"The reality of child sexual abuse is that offenders live among us, and to imagine that this one person that has been arrested is the only one, that children are at risk of, would be very naïve of all parents. We need to understand that one in three girl and boy children in our country are at risk of being sexually abused by the age of 17. And with the internet becoming an avenue to communicate with children, this has also increased the risk of child pornography and child sexual abuse."
